Veloura is built on a simple conviction: a recommendation is only worth something if it comes from someone who genuinely cares. Here is how we decide what makes it onto the platform, and what doesn't.

A place needs a soul, not just a score.

We don't list places because they have 4.8 stars or because they're trending on social media. We list them because someone who knows the difference between good and great has sat there, eaten there, and come back.

A place with soul is one where the owner knows their regulars by name. Where the food tells you something about where you are. Where the atmosphere wasn't designed by a consultant. It just happened over time.

Every recommendation is personal.

Places on Veloura are submitted by real people in our community: locals, long-term expats, and travelers who know the difference between a place that's been discovered and a place that's worth discovering.

Each submission is reviewed before it goes live. We ask: would we send a friend here? Would we come back ourselves? If the answer isn't yes, it doesn't make the cut.

The feeling matters more than the category.

We use the word aufgehoben, a German concept for being held, lifted, and preserved all at once. It's the feeling of walking into a room and sensing immediately that something real is happening here.

Not every great place is a fine dining restaurant. Some of the best meals happen at a plastic table with no menu. The chef has been making the same dish for 30 years and has never needed to explain it. Those places belong on Veloura too.

We stay current or we stay quiet.

A recommendation that's six months out of date, is worse than no recommendation. When a place changes ownership, drops its standards, or closes, it comes off the platform. We'd rather have fewer listings you can trust than a long list you have to second-guess.

Veloura is editorially independent. Our rankings and listings are never influenced by commercial relationships. A place cannot buy its way onto the platform, improve its ranking through advertising, or pay to be featured.
